Ohh Valentines Day

13 02 2011

Tomorrow is valentines day. Or Singles Awareness Day as my friends and I like to call it. But here are something you might not know. Valentines Day is named after St. Valentine who died on February 14th 269 A.D. The Emperor, Claudius (manly name, right?), wanted a bigger army and thought that if the young men didn’t get married they would be more likely to enlist. Well, that didn’t work because the men still wanted to get married. St. Valentine, being a priest, would secretly wed people in a back room lit by candles. One night they were caught. The couple got away but Valentine didn’t. He was thrown in jail, and later murdered, for not obeying the emperor’s law.

I’m not completely sure about the next part, but I read that he befriended the jailers daughter and wrote her a note the day he was put to death. They say he signed it “Your Valentine.” Since that was his name it didn’t mean anything except a signature but it is said to be the reason we write Valentine Cards.

Even though Valentines Day does have a lot to do with love, it also has a lot to do with a guy who stood up for something. I think that’s pretty cool.
