The ending on this video is the best!

Chap Stick, Chapped Lips, And Things Like Chemistry

11 02 2011

I’m not exactly sure why I think this video is funny. Maybe it’s because if I ever went to somebody and said “Let’s make a music video in a nursing home…” They would just look at me like I had 4 heads and laugh. So here’s a little old school Relient K

Media. Is It Really Innocent?

7 09 2010

Have you ever thought that maybe media really does effect us? That when we say we aren’t really listening to the words, we are lying? Most songs that I say I’m not listening to the words on, are the very songs I can sing out loud. Or maybe it’s a movie. We  say “I know it’s wrong and I won’t ever do that..” and a few months later, we start doing/saying whatever it is we said we would never do. I’m not against secular music or movies! But I think we need to be careful which ones we chose to listen to and watch. Think about it, we are exposed to media all the time. How can it not have some impact?

Let’s look at some examples of songs…

Teenage Dream by Katy Perry -says  “let’s go all the way tonight, no regrets..”  and a really dirty music video! It promotes sex outside of marriage.

California Girls by Katy Perry- reinforces in girls that we need to show off our bodies and get guys for superficial and physical reasons. Plus, it’s also backed up with a dirty music video.

Love The Way You Lie by Rihanna and Eminem-How can you love the way somebody lies? The story is that he cheats on her and treats her horrible and she tries to leave but never does. She keeps coming back to him even though he’s abusive. This type of thing happens all the time.

Take it Off by Kesha- I think you get the point on this one.

And so many others that say sleeping around is ok, and it’s ok to have sex with anybody you want, that swearing is ok, that taking God’s name in vein is ok, and one of the biggest themes is that girls are just items and lusting after them is ok.

I don’t really want to get into movies because 1) there are a lot of bad movies out there , and 2) because there is a line that needs to be drawn and sometimes I’m not sure where to draw it. When it comes to action and violence I think there is A LOT more freedom than when we are talking about sex scenes and a lot of sexual comments. But something I heard a few weeks ago really hit me hard. The guy said that when we engage and are entertained by things that are evil to God we are actively going against Him. So when we watch a sex scene or listen to bad music we are mocking Him because those sins are what He died for. Why are we entertained by the very things that Christ died for? He died so that we could be washed free of those sins, not so we could continue to take part in them. So when deciding what movies to watch and what music to listen to, think about that first.

The point of this post is to simply make us think, to make me think. I’m not an expert at all, and I’m working through what the line is. Maybe we should just say that if it’s in that zone of I-don’t-know-but-it’s-not-the-worst-I’ve-ever-seen, we should say it’s not worth watching. Maybe you don’t agree with me, I don’t really care. I just think we need to be careful with what we let into our minds. It really does effect us, whether positively or negatively.

Again, like I said at the beginning, I’m not against movies or secular music. Just some movies and some secular music. It’s not all bad. I listen to secular music and I watch movies,  I am just trying to work on which ones I watch and listen to. It’s hard! I’ll admit it. I want to see that romantic comedy that just came out or listen to that song with the awesome music! But then I find out that there are a lot of sex scenes and language and that the song is all about stuff I don’t need to be listening to.

The bummer is, is that there aren’t many Christian artists who are pop, hip hop/rap etc.  If you guys want to share some good Christian artists go for it! I’ve been looking for some new music! :D

WOW! This ended up being a really long post! Sorry!
