Faith-Not an Emotion

10 09 2011

This is a daily devotional from the book My Utmost For His Highest. I just had to share it with you all!

“For a while, we are fully aware of God’s concern for us. But then, when God begins to use us in His work, we begin to take on a pitiful look and talk only of our trials and difficulties. And all the while God is trying to make us do our work as hidden people who are not in the spotlight. None of us would be hidden spiritually if we could help it. Can we do our work when it seems that God has sealed up heaven? Some of us always want to be brightly illuminated saints with golden halos and with the continual glow of inspiration, and to have other saints of God dealing with us all the time. A self-assured saint is of no value to God. He is abnormal, unfit for daily life, and completely unlike God. We are here, not as immature angels, but as men and women, to do the work of this world. And we are to do it with an infinitely greater power to withstand the struggle because we have been born from above.

If we continually try to bring back those exceptional moments of inspiration, it is a sign that it is not God we want. We are becoming obsessed with the moments when God did come and speak with us, and we are insisting that He do it again. But what God wants us to do is to “walk by faith.” How many of us have set ourselves aside as if to say, “I cannot do anything else until God appears to me”? He will never do it. We will have to get up on our own, without any inspiration and without any sudden touch from God. Then comes our surprise and we find ourselves exclaiming, “Why, He was there all the time, and I never knew it!” Never live for those exceptional moments— they are surprises. God will give us His touches of inspiration only when He sees that we are not in danger of being led away by them. We must never consider our moments of inspiration as the standard way of life— our work is our standard.”

“It should be your JOY to be tried and tested by God because you know that HE is molding your character into CHRIST-LIKENESS.” – Martha Peace

I’m not gonna lie, today wasn’t the easiest day of my life. But, something I learned was that in the pain, we can find JOY. As I was hurting for a friend, talking with them, praying for them, and seeking out what the Bible says, I found that through the hurt in the situation there is joy because of the love.  To hurt for others is joy. To know that I am getting a taste of what it must feel like for God, is incredible.

Joy isn’t happiness because happiness is simply a feeling. Joy can be a struggle. Joy doesn’t always happen when things are going fine. James 1 :2 says

” Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters,[a] whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.”

Joy comes when we learn to love like God and trust fully in Him.

Ohh Graduation

29 05 2011

Every spring this thing called graduation comes around. In the past, it’s been a time for other people to leave. This year it was my turn. Yesterday, May 28, 2011, I graduated from high school.

It’s bittersweet really. It has a taste of bitterness because people are leaving, life is changing and even though we have plans, those plans tend to change. God’s hand overtakes our lives and He doesn’t always do what we think He should do.

But it’s sweet because this stage of life is over and it’s time to start a new one. I, and the rest of the 2011 grads, get to move on to the next part of life that God has for us. It’s an opportunity to step out of our comfort zones and trust Him.

I have many fond memories of the past 4 years, as I’m sure all of us do, but I also have some not so great ones. I’ve made friends, but I’ve lost friends. I’ve learned from my mistakes, as well as my successes. I’ve pushed God away, and I’ve pulled close. But overall high school hasn’t been too bad.

So for the seniors reading this, I want to leave you with something simple; this life won’t always be easy but as followers of Christ, we are made for it. Glorify God in everything you do! And keep your eyes focused on Jesus! Love God. Love People. After that, nothing Else matters.

How do we live for today? What does it look like to live as though today is your last but plan like you have a thousand years left? I’m not altogether sure, but I do know that we, as Christians, can’t live only in the future. We have to plan for it, but we can’t live in it. We have to be willing to pull our attention to the day so that we can be used by God.LIve LIfe Now

One thing I’ve found is that when I am focused only on the future, I can’t live to the fullest right now. The Spirit can’t lead me. I won’t allow it to because I’m not looking for people to love, help, or encourage.

I am a future person and I have this horrible habit of living in it. I focus on college and how much I want to graduate, but in that I miss the time I have left with my family and friends. I miss the opportunities God gives me to love on the people around me. So use TODAY. Allow God to use you and look for ways to be used by Him.

SUCH JOY SUCH UNSPEAKABLE JOY
SUCH PEACE AND EVERLASTING PEACE
SUCH LOVE PURE AND HOLY LOVE
